About Amy
"Every family that comes before this court deserves to be heard, to understand the basis for the decisions made, and to leave the courtroom with dignity."
-Amy Van Sickle
Amy Van Sickle was born and raised in Ventura County, where she has spent her entire legal career protecting children and families in the community she calls home.
After witnessing firsthand the impact of divorce on her own family, and the difference that cooperative, child-centered co-parenting makes, Amy committed herself to family law. While in college, she worked in her father's family law practice and saw how court orders shape families' lives for years after a case concludes. She went on to earn her law degree and built a nearly 20-year career as a family law attorney in Ventura County.
Amy served as court-appointed Minor's Counsel from 2008 to 2022, representing children in the county's highest-conflict custody cases, appointed by judges who trusted her judgment, her preparation, and her commitment to giving children a voice. She was also President of the Ventura County Bar Association's Family Law Section from 2021 to 2022.
In February 2023, Amy transitioned to the bench as a Ventura County Superior Court Commissioner, handling domestic violence, civil and gun violence restraining orders, and child support matters. In February 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed her as a Ventura County Superior Court Judge. Within 10 months of her appointment, Presiding Judge Matthew Guasco selected her to serve as Supervising Family Law Judge, overseeing four other judges and one commissioner, and serving on the court's Executive Committee.
Amy also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Community Property at Ventura College of Law and has presented on judicial ethics, self-represented litigants, and social media to bar associations across the region.
Amy is running to retain her seat because Ventura County families deserve a judicial officer with proven, specialized experience in the law that governs their most personal and consequential legal matters.
How Amy approaches the bench
Every voice matters
Every litigant deserves to be heard and to understand the basis for decisions made. Transparency fosters compliance, and compliance keeps families stable.
Access to justice
Geographic, financial, and scheduling barriers should not determine whose rights are protected. Amy accommodates remote appearances for all who need them.
Children first
Fourteen years as Minor's Counsel shaped Amy's understanding of what children in high-conflict families need. That perspective informs every custody matter she hears.
Solutions over conflict
Families who reach their own agreements comply better and litigate less. Amy works toward practical resolutions in every hearing and settlement conference.
